About Monica
Monica Maya is a multimedia artist whose work primarily focuses on the tactile beauty of wool fibers, silk, natural fibers and objects, paper and various paint mediums. Using a wet felting process, she brings her wall pieces to life in a dynamic, three-dimensional form, creating textures and depth that create a visual and tactile engagement. Her artistic practice is driven by a deep appreciation for the natural materials she uses, shaping them into pieces that evoke a sense of softness and strength.
In addition to her felted work, Monica Maya often combines her creations with antique objects such as water taps, door knobs, pulleys, and other found treasures. These elements, filled with history and character, are reimagined and exposed once more as art, bringing together the old and new in harmonious, unexpected ways. Through her work, she explores the intersection of craft, history, and the beauty in everyday objects, offering a fresh perspective on both materials and memories.
As a lifelong devotee of art in all its forms, Monica has been captivated by creative expression since childhood. From drawing and painting to textiles and jewelry, she finds joy in every medium where her hands can bring her imagination to life. Born and raised in Mexico City, Monica carries the vibrant colors, bold patterns, and rich cultural heritage of her homeland deep within her artistic soul. This influence shines through Monica’s work, a testament to the place that shaped her. Monica pursued her artistic passion formally by studying Graphic Design in Mexico City, laying the foundation for a career defined by creativity and craftsmanship.

For ten years, Monica channeled her skills into a meaningful venture, founding a company that produced hand-painted silk products. Monica designed each piece herself and empowered a group of women by training them to craft these works from their homes, providing them with a fair and sustainable income. This experience blended her love for art with a commitment to community—a thread that continues to weave through her journey.
After immigrating to Canada, Monica discovered the enchanting world of felt art, sparked by its prominence in Waldorf education, where her children spent their early school years. This new medium opened fresh avenues for exploration, blending my tactile instincts with a softer, yet equally expressive, form. Today, Monica’s art reflects a fusion of these influences—vibrant Mexican roots, entrepreneurial spirit, art and the subtle beauty of felt—inviting others to experience the stories and emotions woven into every creation.
